We are ecstatic to announce the launch of the Edinburgh Photo Guide app, which is now available on Android and iOS devices.

The Edinburgh Photo Guide app helps photography enthusiasts absorb our beautiful city.

With World Heritage Site status, the City of Edinburgh boasts a wealth of attractions, historic sites and architecture. As a booming tourism destination, it attracts millions of visitors from around the world every year. It’s no surprise that photography is a popular pass-time for both visitors and locals alike.

However, it can be difficult to know where to get a good shot if you don’t know the city well. Even for locals who know the Cities secrets it can still be a struggle to capture the moment with its ever-changing weather conditions.

To help navigate around the fantastic beauty spots and historic sites of Edinburgh, there are a few options to help make the most of the shot. One option is to book onto one of the many guided tours around Edinburgh. Some of these tours will include a photography focus and provide some tips and advice. However, these can be costly, there can be language barriers, and little opportunity to go off-piste.

Another option is to use maps and Edinburgh Guide apps to find your way around. To date, there are no Edinburgh app guides that incorporate a photographic focus.

We aimed to bring these two experiences together with the Edinburgh Photography Guide App.

The vision behind this project was to build an app with two main purposes: guide users towards the different attractions and provide key tips on making the most out of each shot.  The end result is a mobile app that allows users to find points of interest around Edinburgh based on their interests.

Either start with a quick, suggested tour based on duration and theme, or plan your own custom tour based on your interests. Each point is easy to find, either by viewing it on the map, or by accessing step by step directions to take you straight there. To add some context, read about the history and background behind each attraction. And when you are ready to shoot, view camera settings tips, such as suggested angles, exposure, optimal time of day etc.

We know that language barriers can often get in the way during guided tours, so it was important to us that the app is available in multiple languages. No need to do anything differently, the app will automatically detect your phones language settings adapt accordingly. We also built in a few other features, such as weather information and suggested bus tour and accommodation providers.

The process of building this app has been exciting and rewarding. We have worked closely with Gair Brisbane, the founder of Edinburgh Photography Guide, to complete a project that saw us delving into the mind-set of a photographer and tourist. We look forward to seeing the app grow and potentially launching in cities across the UK!
