Transformed complex data workflows into intuitive user experiences

Their core expertise lay in backend systems and powerful data workflows built with Python, but they identified a gap in their offerings: the frontend user experience needed to match the sophistication of their underlying technology. Dufrain recognised that many of their tools, while technically sound, could be difficult for clients to navigate without an intuitive interface, particularly for functionality tied to compliance and data requests.

Dufrain’s platform contained robust capabilities, such as a GDPR compliance scanning system and backend processes for handling large, structured datasets. These tools served vital functions in assessing regulatory risk and helping organisations manage data compliance, but Dufrain lacked the specialist user experience design and frontend development expertise to present these capabilities in a way that felt approachable and useful to their clients. The absence of a clear UI limited client uptake, slowed engagement, and made it harder for Dufrain to showcase the full value of their solutions. The challenge was not technical capability but realising that capability in a user-centred, intuitive format without compromising performance or reliability.

Our collaboration began with a clear shared objective: transform Dufrain’s backend systems into tools that clients could engage with confidently and efficiently. We adopted an agile approach with regular two-weekly iterations, working closely with the Dufrain team to ensure clarity, alignment, and ongoing feedback.

One major piece of work was designing and building an intuitive interface for the GDPR compliance scanning tool. Dufrain’s backend could already assess datasets for compliance, but presenting those insights in a usable digital interface made the analysis accessible to business users. Our team designed a clear, structured frontend that translated backend results into meaningful screens and interactions, helping users interpret complex compliance data without confusion.

Another important deliverable was the Subject Access Request (SAR) portal. Handling subject access requests can be slow and error-prone, particularly with large volumes of data involved. We built a frontend system that allows users to submit requests, track progress, and view structured results, turning what was once a labour-intensive process into an efficient workflow.

Throughout the engagement, GearedApp took responsibility for interface design and frontend development using React and Tailwind, working against Dufrain’s Python-based backend APIs. Collaboration was sustained through regular feedback loops that ensured incremental improvements and maintained focus on user needs.

The work transformed Dufrain’s capability to present technical tools as practical solutions. Where previously users interacted indirectly with backend systems or relied on internal experts to interpret outputs, the new interfaces allow clients to engage directly with powerful analytics through clear, guided workflows. The GDPR compliance tool now looks and feels like a purpose-built solution rather than a backend report, helping organisations manage risk with confidence. Similarly, the SAR portal shifts a cumbersome regulatory process into a streamlined experience that saves time, reduces friction, and improves transparency for users.

For Dufrain, this meant they could now show clients working applications that reflect both the depth of their data expertise and a polished user experience. The improved frontend capabilities also positioned Dufrain more competitively in a crowded data consultancy space, making client acquisition conversations more tangible and differentiated.

Looking ahead, Dufrain plans to build on these foundations by further enhancing frontend capabilities and expanding the range of user-facing tools. This includes refining dashboard components, extending visual analytics, and exploring integrations that support additional compliance and regulatory use cases. Continuous iteration based on client feedback will ensure the platform evolves in ways that close the gap between advanced technical workflows and real-world user needs, helping Dufrain solidify its position as a leader in data consulting and analytics solutions
